Arturia MiniFreak 49: Full-Size Keys and an XYZ Touch Matrix for Hybrid Synthesis

Arturia MiniFreak 49 hybrid synthesizer in a recording studio setup

When Arturia introduced the original 37-key MiniFreak, its combination of experimental digital oscillators and polyphonic analog filters quickly made it a staple on studio desks and live stages. Yet keyboardists who wanted room for two-handed voicings, wide splits, and deeper physical control kept asking for a larger format. The Arturia MiniFreak 49 answers that call—not simply by stretching the chassis, but by rethinking how you interact with its six-voice hybrid engine through a full-size 49-note keybed and a multidimensional XYZ touch matrix.

From 37 Mini-Keys to a 49-Key Performance Instrument

The most immediate change on the MiniFreak 49 is its 49-note full-size, semi-weighted keyboard with velocity sensitivity and channel aftertouch. Having four full octaves transforms how the six-voice polyphonic (and up to 12-voice paraphonic) architecture plays under the fingers—whether you are voicing lush virtual-analog chords, sweeping wavetable pads, or articulating fast lead lines. To match the full-size keys, Arturia replaced the original capacitive pitch and mod strips with machined aluminum pitch and modulation wheels, paired with a larger 1.3-inch OLED display and three dedicated direct-access engine buttons per oscillator.

Visual Modulation and Performance on the XYZ Touch Matrix

On the original MiniFreak, the pin-style modulation matrix was already one of the fastest ways to wire LFOs, envelopes, and cycling modulators to synthesis parameters. On the MiniFreak 49, that grid evolves into a pressure-sensitive, illuminated XYZ touch matrix. In Matrix mode, color-coded LEDs show active routings across 7 sources and 13 destinations at a glance, and you can even draw custom LFO waveforms directly across the surface with your finger.

Switch the matrix to Presets mode and you can swipe through color-coded sound categories across 350 factory patches and 162 user slots. Flip to Freak Control mode and the surface becomes an expressive X/Y/pressure performance pad controlling Macros, Gate length, Spice randomization, Time Stretch, Filter Freak, Timbre Shape, and FX Mix in real time.

Expanded Digital Engines, User Samples, and Analog Filter FM

Under the hood, the twin digital sound engines now offer more than 30 oscillator modes—including 15 new algorithms and collaborations spanning Arturia, Mutable Instruments, and Noise Engineering—alongside 256 MB of onboard memory for importing your own user samples and wavetables via the included MiniFreak V plugin. Each voice feeds a genuine analog state-variable filter (low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass) capable of smooth self-oscillation. New to the 49-key hardware are dedicated front-panel controls for audio-rate Filter FM (sourced from Oscillator 1 or Oscillator 2) and selectable stereo Voice Panning algorithms that spread voices across the stereo field before hitting the three digital FX slots.
