Marantz MCR 60n + Dali Sonik 1 – A Small-Room System That Does Everything

The Marantz MCR 60n DAB packs CD, MM phono, HEOS streaming, DAB+ and HDMI eARC into a chassis the size of a hardback, and the Dali Sonik 1 is the speaker built for the same kind of room: ultra-compact, shelf-, stand- or wall-mountable, and surprisingly full-bodied. Together they are a complete system for a flat, a study or a bedroom, ordered in one go and set up in an evening.

The MCR 60n DAB plays discs, records, radio and streams from a chassis you can hide on a shelf, and the Sonik 1 is the smallest cabinet DALI builds with a 5¼-inch wood fibre woofer and a 29 mm soft dome tweeter. The system

Marantz MCR 60n DAB

One chassis holds a front-loading CD mechanism, an MM phono stage, DAB+ and FM radio, HEOS streaming and four channels of amplification. HDMI eARC brings the television in on the same remote. It takes the footprint of a hardback book, so it works where a stack of separates never would.

DALI Sonik 1

Sonik 1 is the entry point to DALI's Sonik series: a 29 mm low-loss soft dome tweeter over a 5¼-inch wood fibre woofer built on DALI's SMC magnet system and Clarity Cone. The crossover sits at 2,800 Hz and the cabinet asks 25 – 100 W of amplifier power. It is an easy 6 Ω load and small enough to stand on a shelf or a bracket.

Setting it up

  1. Place the Sonik 1 pair on a shelf, on stands or on brackets, tweeters as close to ear height as the room allows.
  2. Run speaker cable to the Speaker A terminals on the MCR 60n and keep the polarity the same on both sides.
  3. Connect the television to HDMI eARC and a turntable with an MM cartridge to the phono input.
  4. Fit the aerial, join the receiver to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then finish setup in the HEOS app.
  5. Set the four Smart Select presets to the sources you use daily.

Questions

Is the MCR 60n a good match for a 6 Ω speaker?

Yes. DALI asks for 25 – 100 W behind the Sonik 1, and the MCR 60n is rated 2 × 65 W into 4 Ω, so it drives the 6 Ω load comfortably in a small or medium room.

Can the Sonik 1 go on a wall?

DALI positions Sonik 1 for a stand, a shelf or wall mounting. Keep the tweeter as near to ear height as you can and allow space behind the cabinet.

How loud will this system play?

The Sonik 1 is specified at 86 dB sensitivity and a maximum SPL of 106 dB at one metre, which is more than enough for a bedroom, a study or a small living room.

Do I need a separate CD player or streamer?

No. The MCR 60n has a front-loading CD mechanism, DAB+, FM and internet radio, and HEOS streaming with AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL and Roon.

What finishes are available?

Sonik 1 comes in Black Ash, White, Walnut and Natural Oak; the MCR 60n comes in Matte Black or Marantz Champagne Gold.

Can I add a subwoofer?

Yes. The MCR 60n has a subwoofer pre-out with an adjustable crossover, which is a sensible upgrade with a cabinet this compact.

What speaker cable should I use?

Any good two-core speaker cable. The MCR 60n uses screw terminals that take bare wire or pin ends, so measure each run before you cut.
